What is your background Elaine?
I originally trained in graphic design at the Southampton Art College. Leaving in the early 80's, I continued to work in a number of design studios as a graphic designer, specialising in illustration and calligraphy and handling my own accounts. Deciding in the mid 90's to focus my skills more hands-on in decorative paint effects for interiors, I quickly became established as an interior artist. From there I started my own design business with commissions from both private clients and commercial agencies where I was employed as a design stylist for photo shoots. In 1995 I began working with the BBC as a lead designer on the daytime interiors show REAL ROOMS. The following year this progressed to co-presenting various other television shows for both ITV and CHANNEL 4. This led to appearances at The Good Homes Show plus design related interviews on Radio 4 and local radio. All whilst building my design business in Southampton.

What is the process?
For the full design service we start with an informal free visit to judge the scale of the project and then provide a design estimate. When approved, Elaine will visit to take a detailed brief, along with reference photographs and appropriate room sizes. We then design the scheme(s) to suit your tastes, requirements and budget. You should allow 2 - 3 weeks before we complete and return to present with appropriate samples and swatches. You could take the designs from there or we could provide you with detailed estimates for all, or part, of the work. See our Services page, as every client's needs are different, so please get in touch to discuss your project.

How long does it take?
This can vary depending on the scope of works or service selected, but to give you some idea, the full design could take 2 - 3 weeks from the briefing meeting. This allows us time to consider every detail of the design thoroughly and obtain samples etc. Estimating the actual works after the agreed design could take another 2 weeks. Completing soft furnishings and surface decorations could take 4-8 weeks. Allow 8-16 weeks for bespoke furniture deliveries.

At what stage do I get you involved?
As soon as possible! Architects and builders do not always consider the interior specifications fully. Ideally everything from the lighting to the wardrobes should be looked at thoroughly before work begins. We have often had to move radiators, door openings, switches, staircases, even in 'new homes' to make the very best possible use of space. We may even suggest a different style of fireplace, internal door or ironmongery throughout. It is best to consider everything structurally before even thinking about colours to avoid compromise or extra costs later.

What area do you cover?
For practical project management, once works start, the main areas we cover are the South Coast; Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset and Surrey, however we're happy to travel further for our design services. We offer a free of charge no-obligation first meeting if within a reasonable distance from Southampton. Further afield is possible but we would then charge for our time. Alternatively, with email etc, exchanging information has never been easier. We have completed some excellent projects without ever being at the property. Our online design service maybe worth considering.

Do you offer a design only service?
Yes. We understand that some clients prefer to do part or all of the works themselves. They just want a design direction and plans to show the builders and decorators etc. You can convey and explain so much more with a design/drawing. We could provide everything you need, so you can take over.

Can you just offer advice?
Yes. Not everyone requires the complete service. Elaine can do design and styling consultations offering on the spot advice, ideas and suggestions for improvements to what you already have. Personal consultations from £150.00 + VAT. However the very best solutions come from properly considered designs workout over time on the drawing board. Call or email us to discuss how we can best help you.

Your portfolio is great, but my house is a different style?
These pictures are just a selection of some of the work we've designed and completed over the years. From listed country homes to micro studio apartments, Elaine has designed particularly difficult and unusual rooms of all sorts. Including; The Southampton Football Club players' chill-out lounge, from just a shell. A modern open-plan family house in South Africa from the architects drafts and photographs in the post. A low-budget guest lodge in France via email and many, many more. Additionally, during her time with various television production companies, Elaine designed over 100 individual rooms, travelling all over the country. Including the jockeys' weighing room at the Sandown race course. A double decker bus interior for a youth charity and a mess room for HMS Belfast. Every brief is different, every project unique. ... so I think we can safely say we are versatile and can adapt to your style!

Can you work with my existing furniture?
Yes. We are asked to work with pieces of furniture that are from a previous home quite often. Sometimes this sets the style of the new interior. We can help by providing a scheme that coordinates some or all of the elements. Occasionally, if the new property really is quite different from where the furniture has come from, we could offer ideas on ways to bring the old furniture up-to-date or suggest new pieces, so that they could be changed when funds allow.

What happens if I don't like the design?
During the initial meeting and subsequent briefing session we discuss your ideas fully. Don't worry if you are not sure what you want, that's why you've asked for help. Elaine asks questions to draw out a brief. Many clients find it useful to show us a look/style from magazines or reference a favorite visited location. Remember the more information you give, the closer your design will be to your taste. We would provide alternatives to a particular item presented should it be necessary but we have NEVER had to re design a room - trust us, after 15 years in the business, we know what we're doing!

Can you manage the project for me?
We would be delighted to take your design through to total completion. We would keep you up-to-date with progress as much or as little as you want to be involved. Face to face site meetings or via email with weekly reports. Or we could just help in selected areas if you prefer, from specialist decorating, to window treatments, interior lighting schemes to bespoke furniture. Please look at the endorsements to see how we have helped others!

Can I use my own trades people?
We are happy to work with any contractors that you prefer. If you need support in other areas or trades, please let us know. We continually work with a range of companies to achieve the right results for your design. We do not employ these services full-time as we prefer not to be tied to any one source, taking advantage of many trades and their expertise when needed and ensuring that you receive an unbiased cost effective service. Using our management services, we can keep a close eye on maintaining design integrity on your behalf.

What is your background Gary?
I too trained in graphic design and worked in a number of design and advertising agencies for over 20 years. My position and skills evolved to become a studio/project manager & print buyer, so more than used to dealing with teams of people, budgets and deadlines. My last job was working for Publicis in Baker Street as a project manger, working on some major UK accounts. During this time Elaine and I successfully designed and renovated several houses of our own, gaining even more experience, before moving on to our next house. As the interior design business grew and the London commute lost it's appeal, I joined Elaine in 2003, taking on the managment side with some creative & technical input. We've now got quite a fews years and completed projects to our credit!

Can you design from estate agents plans?
We can, but generally they are not very accurate. Architects plans are ideal. We could contact with the agent, so we can check their measurements. We could then design and present in the usual way or you could opt for our online service.

Why commission us rather than an architect?
Architects are invaluable in knowing what the current regulations are, obtaining necessary permissions and producing structural plans/specifications. But sometimes it takes an experienced 'interior' designer with space-planning and interior architectural experience to draw out of people how they want to use their space. Then give them the solutions that are not only functional but look good too!

I'm good with colours etc, so how can you add value?
We can give you the home you didn't know you wanted! Our clients have learned through experience the difference a creative professional can bring to a project, no matter how small. From reconfiguring the flow of a single room to the whole house an interior designer can supply a unique imaginative design to suit your property and the way you live in it. We keep up-to-date with trade shows, products and literature supplying us with advanced, in-depth knowledge of materials and methods in this ever changing field. We help you think differently about your space offering advice that saves you the frustration and expense of getting it wrong. But don't just take our word for it, have a look through our testimonials.
